About Schools for Children of Cambodia
What We Do
Mission
Schools for Children of Cambodia is committed to ensuring that every child has the equal right to enjoy a quality education, and believes that this is the route out of poverty and the basis for sustainable development.
Vision
We see a day when every Cambodian child will have access to a free, quality education which empowers them, their families and communities to realize their full potential.
Core Values
Schools for Children of Cambodia (SCC) supports, develops and partners programs that reflect our core values:
- Access to a free, quality education for every child
- Inclusion and empowerment of those we seek to help
- Honesty and transparency in everything we do
- Respect for the culture, environment and national laws of where we work
- An egoless approach to fulfilling real needs with limited resources
Quality Education
SCC observes and supports the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Millennium Development Goal of Universal Primary Education, and the widely accepted standards that define a relevant, quality education for all:
- The shared belief that every child can be educated
- Safe, clean and orderly schools, providing an environment conducive to learning
- Educational content that is relevant to the lives of the students
- Adequate books and learning materials
- Ongoing training and development of teachers
- Strong school leadership
- Parent and community involvement in the education of their children and the running of their schools
We achieve our objectives through three programs:
School Adoption
SCC adopts existing government-run primary schools that struggle to provide access to quality education to the children in their communities. We facilitate meetings with school administrators, teachers, parents, and local authorities to identify a community's education needs and together, implement appropriate solutions. Solutions may include:
- Building classrooms, libraries and computer labs. We ensure that school facilities accommodate all children in the community and provide access to a range of educational opportunities.
- Supplementing teachers' government salaries. To ensure that education is accessible to all, we provide teachers with living wages so that no informal school fees are collected from students.
- Supplementing schools' operational budgets. SCC empowers school administrators and teachers to equip their schools with the materials they need through monthly stipends.
-
Providing access to life skills classes. We assist schools to offer extra-curricular classes to provide a well-rounded education to students.
-
Providing capacity-building to teachers and school administrators. SCC-sponsored school exchange visits and in-service training allow school staff to share best practices and refine their teaching practices.
SCC currently supports five primary schools, through which 2,042 students have access to free education.
Student Sponsorship
SCC sponsors academically-inclined students who graduate from SCC-supported primary schools and who are at-risk of dropping out of school for financial reasons. Through our student sponsorship program, secondary and high school students receive school uniforms and school supplies as well as a monthly stipend to cover the cost of exam papers and class fees. SCC currently supports 29 students who are studying in grades 7 through 12.
Who We Are

Where We Operate
Schools for Children of Cambodia currently focuses its efforts in Siem Reap province. This northwest province is world-famous for the Angkor temple ruins which attract nearly 2 million tourists each year. Despite its growing tourism industry, Siem Reap continues to be among the three poorest provinces in Cambodia. Nearly half of its 776,000 residents are considered impoverished. Although Siem Reap is a predominantly agricultural province with 6.6% of the nation's land area, its rice productivity is the lowest in the country.[1]
Over 70% of Siem Reap's population has not completed a primary education.[2] Although the province's primary net enrollment ratio is on the rise (95%), drop-out and repeat rates continue to be high. Secondary education statistics show that only 18% of appropriately-aged students are enrolled in lower secondary school; only 8% are enrolled in upper secondary school.[3]
